If you've never meditated before, using something to focus on is extremely helpful. Traditionally, we focus on our breath but by using a mala (translates to garland) we focus on passing the beads over our hand whilst saying a mantra; a sacred sound, word or phrase repeated to focus the mind. This can be much more effective for many people because keeping our attention on our inhalation and exhalation can be tricky! Especially when our mind is racing at 100mph with all the to-do lists!
